Sedation is often used for long and extensive procedures, such as fillings, extractions, crowns, or root canals. But, at Kids 4 Ever Pediatric Dentistry, we do not limit sedation dentistry to those procedures. Sedation is also available for patients who have anxiety during their visits to our family dental clinic or for our young patients who have difficulties sitting still. If your children have a low pain tolerance or a strong gag reflex, sedation dentistry may be something to consider to make their visit to the pediatric dentist more pleasant. Most often referred to as “laughing gas,” this type of sedation is used in pediatric dentistry to reduce anxiety and get favorable treatment outcomes in adults and children of all ages. This gas is a mild sedative that is administered with a mixture of oxygen. While under the influence of nitrous oxide, patients are still conscious and can communicate with staff during their procedure. After the procedure, the gas is turned off and oxygen is administered for several minutes to flush out any remaining nitrous and the effects wear off quickly.
